South Africa has golf courses that can compete with some of the best in the world. The most famous is Fancourt, in the Southern Cape. It is popular with tourists from Europe and the US. Fancourt is where the President Cup was played in 2004. A team of top US golfers, including Tiger Woods, tied with the international team captained by Gary Player. The game between Tiger and Ernie ended in a dramatic draw. The players decided to call it a day because it had become dark and Gary and Jack Nicklaus, the non-playing US captain - and another golfing legend - agreed to a draw. The cup is being shared until the US and the international team compete again.
The publicity generated by this tournament put South Africa in the spotlight as one of the world's emerging tourism destinations.
